History Of The Earl Malone Award

In 1995, the Texas Association of Fire Educators created a new award to honor individuals who were directly involved in the training of their department and other area departments and who were the Training Officer for their department.

The Earl Malone Award was created to honor Earl Malone, one of the founders of the Texas Association of Fire Educators. To honor his dedication to the Texas Fire Service and to the instructors of the State of Texas, the Texas Association of Fire Educators instituted the Earl Malone Award for Training Officers, so dear to Earl's heart.

Earl Malone was born on March 28, 1925 in Chicasha, Oklahoma. He moved to Texas when he was 14 years old. He attended high school in Lubbock, Texas.

After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1946 having received the American Theatre Campaign medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with two Bronze Stars, World War II Victory medal and Good Conduct medal.

He attended Draughons Business College studying accounting from 1949 through 1951. Earl served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1946 through 1956. Earl began his career in the Lubbock Fire Department on October 1, 1955. He was elected as a Vice President for the Texas State Association of Fire Fighters from 1962 through 1980.

After retiring from the Lubbock Fire Department, on May 3, 1980, Earl came to Austin to work with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. Earl made a transition to work for the Texas Commission on Fire Protection in the early 80-s. Earl devoted many hours to promoting more training and education for the fire fighters in the State of Texas. He had many hours training in Police Science and different aspects of Fire Science. He had friends in the different fire departments around the state and outside the fire service. His first love was promoting the fire service in the State of Texas.

Earl and several others began the first (Annual) Instructor's Conference under the protective arm of the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. The Texas Association of Fire Educators became a separate organization separating from the Commission. Earl continued working at the Commission until Februaru of 1989 when he passed away.

Among the many organizations Earl participated in were the Lions Club International, Toastmasters International, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the American Legion and the Ben Hur Shiners of Austin.
